UMNO will continue with efforts to elevate the Bumiputera Economic Empowerment Agenda to a national agenda to ensure the continued survival of Bumiputeras and Malays.
Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said this key element in the president's winding-up speech Saturday meant all aspects would be covered, including empowerment, education and religion, to improve Bumiputeras' and Malays' economic and social standing in the country. However, this did not mean other races would be sidelined.
Shafie, who is rural and regional development minister, said Datuk Seri Najib Razak's speech showed how determined he was in his goal.
"We have heard a lot of new ideas and programmes proposed by debaters during this assembly. We will consider them as they represent the voices of the grassroots."
His sentiments were echoed by Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and Puteri chief Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.
Khairy said Najib's speech touched on many pivotal points debated by the delegates, such as the Key Performance Index, cadreship programme and Bumiputera Economic Agenda.
"He also broached on religion, on how Umno has to uphold and strengthen the sanctity of Islam by ensuring there will be no compromise in deviationist teachings."
Mas Ermieyati said she was touched by Najib's pledge for Umno to rectify wrongs and do what was right for the sanctity of the party.
As Puteri chief, she said the party would do its best to help Umno and Barisan Nasional win in the next general election.
On the Bumiputera Economic Empowerment efforts underway, she said it was not designed to seclude other races, but to upgrade the economic capabilities of Bumiputeras.
"With the empowerment efforts, other races will not be sidelined but will be able to reap the benefits."
Mas said Puteri would have to break away from the "cheerleader" stigma. This would not be impossible, as there was a wealth of talent and knowledge among the members, she added.
"All we need to do is to exploit their skills and use it to enhance the party's role and responsibilities to progress as an Umno wing with depth."
