Najib: We must be the people's party

KUALA LUMPUR - The Umno general assembly has to send a clear signal that Umno is the people's party that puts the people first in all aspects, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The Umno president said the message that Umno was the party of hope not only to the Malays but also to the whole country should be expounded at the general assembly.

"We must reflect that we are the party that always put the people first in all aspects. What is important is that we are conscious of the will of the people.

"We must be the people's party," he said in an interview with Bernama at the Prime Minister's Office at Parliament House here yesterday.

Najib said that although Umno was a bumiputra party, its members should regard Umno as the party that would also bring along other races towards a brighter and more secure future.

On debates at the general assembly, he said Umno members should not raise issues that could hurt the feelings of non-Malays.

"This is not a forum to attack others. It should reflect that Umno is inclusive," he said.

Najib said Umno should reinforce values in its struggle to ward off anything deemed unhealthy.

"Umno must emerge as a party that fights for the people, puts people first and refrains from craving for power for the sake of power. Instead it must be seen as a party that is always willing to put the people's interests above anything else," he said.

On the message he wanted to convey at the general assembly, Najib said he would delve on future challenges faced by the party, Malays, Islam and the country as a whole.

"The presidential address will focus on future challenges, not on successes already known, but appreciation of the successes that have been achieved," he said.

On his expectations at the general assembly, he hoped Umno members should feel that the transformation process was happening to them and not just at the policy or organisation levels.

"Lastly, Umno members should reflect the transformation required, only then the Umno transformation will come to a conclusion," he said.

Najib said Umno members should have confidence that the party was on the right track and should give their support and trust in the leadership to lead the country towards achieving the vision and goals aspired by members and the people.
