PETALING JAYA - The birth of a baby giant panda in Zoo Negara has led to a buzz on social media with many suggesting names for the newborn cub.

One of the most widely suggested is Merdeka, as the baby giant panda is born in the month of August.

"Merdeka," suggested Facebook user Vijyah Balakrishnan.

"Merdeka since it was born so close to it.

"Another reason for its name to be Merdeka is that it will open its eyes on Merdeka Day to celebrate with the nation.

"Merdeka will always be remembered on this special day in our hearts," said another user Aubrey Tan How.

Other names suggested include Xiang Liang by user Boon Teik Chew.

"Xiang Liang, happy," he wrote.

Gin Hsia suggested 'Hope' while Danny Wong suggested the name 'Ling Ling'.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced the 1.45pm birth of the baby panda on his Facebook page on Tuesday.

Twitter user @DayangLeen in her congratulatory message wrote:

"Since so many negative news (have appeared lately), this might be a good one after all."
