GEORGE TOWN: A car parked illegally in Gurney Drive during a Christmas countdown party has been criticised on social media after a photograph showed a group of disabled people unable to get access to the road.
The white sedan was seen blocking the ramp meant for the disabled, causing difficulty to several wheelchair users.
Pulau Tikus assemblyman Yap Soo Huey shared the photo on her Facebook on Christmas day which received a heated debate in the comment section.
She captioned "Shame on driver of White Honda City parked in front of the ramp," alongside the photo.
"Six wheelchair users were blocked from getting off Gurney Drive walkway. There are only two ramps along Gurney Drive, one on each end," she added.
When contacted Yap said it was not the first time that people parked recklessly. She said her intention of sharing the photo was to create awareness.
Comments were also made questioning why Penang Island City Council (MBPP) did not tow the car.
"Aiyiyo...so inconsiderate...summon lo," wrote Priscilla Fork while another person tagged 'Penang Idiot Parking & Reckless Driver' as his comment.
MBPP Enforcement and Public Education committee alternate chairman Dr Tan Kim Hooi said that too many events were taking place on the night.
He said there was not enough manpower to take care of both traffic and parking within the island.
"We will arrange for our officer to patrol such hot spots to avoid such issue from occurring again," he said in a Whatsapp text.
