No applications have been made with the Syariah courts by any Muslim or convert to renounce Islam, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.

However, he said there were applications to the Syariah courts with regards to an individual's status as Muslim.

"This is in respect of confusion over the person's religious status due to his or her birth certificate, identity cards and certificate of conversion," he said in a written reply to Dr Ko Chung Sen (DAP-Kampar).

Similar confusion, said Jamil, happened to Malaysians in Sabah and Sarawak during the registration of their births.

"In Sabah and Sarawak, there are instances in which an individual may have a Muslim name but is not a Muslim," he pointed out. Jamil also said there were 4,520 people who converted to Islam in Kuala Lumpur.
