KUALA LUMPUR - Four men torched an ATM in a fit of rage after they cut it open and found it to be empty.
"They had earlier spray-painted the CCTV with blue paint and cut open the machine using an Oxy-Acetylene gas cutter," city CID chief Senior Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said.
The incident, he said, occurred at about 4.45am yesterday in Jalan Ipoh when the four men drove a Proton Saga FLX to the ATM kiosk.
SAC Gan said police believed the men got angry and torched the ATM when they found that the cash box was empty.
"The men fled before the Fire and Rescue Department reached the scene to put out the fire," he said.
SAC Gan said the bank had removed the cash on Saturday night.
SAC Gan said they found a bag on the floor of the bank and had acquired the CCTV recording to try and determine the identity of the suspects.
"We also checked the registration plate of the Proton Saga and raided the house of the car owner," he said.
However, the owner was not the culprit nor was his car the vehicle used in the attempted theft. "He was at home with his vehicle all through the night," SAC Gan added.
He said police believed the suspects had used a cloned licence plate on the getaway car.
"We are investigating the case under Section 457 of the Penal Code for burglary," he said, urging those with information to contact the police hotline at 03-2115 9999.
