KOTA KINABALU - Police are still trying to find out the motive behind the assault on a shop assistant who was found semi-naked and barely conscious in a drain at Penampang last week.

District police chief Deputy Supt Rosley Hobden said police were hopeful that they could unearth the real story why the 28-year-old shop assistant was assaulted.

"We have arrested the woman's close friend," he said, adding that the man was in his 20s.

"We are checking if more than one suspect was involved," he said after the seventh Ops Selamat launch in Penampang yesterday.

The case is being investigated for rape and voluntarily causing grievous hurt.

DSP Rosley said the victim was still traumatised by the incident and would only be able to give more information after she recovers fully.

He advised the public not to spread rumours about the case and to be sensitive to the feelings of the victim and her family.

On July 9, the woman, clad only in only her bra, was discovered barely conscious in the drain.
