PETALING JAYA: Umno members should not 'overreact' to Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's support of the nine Teluk Kemang branch leaders facing a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday, said Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin (pic).
"His showing up to support certain people in Umno… that is his call, I do not think that we should overreact in this particular case. We want to get through the assembly first and make sure that the party is intact," he told reporters at the Sports Law Conference here.
Khairy reiterated that the Umno supreme council had decided on the order of event for the party's annual general assembly starting on Dec 8.
"As far as the winding-up speech is concerned, we have not decided yet on who's to speak and who's not to speak so that's a bit too early to speculate," he said.
Muhiyddin showed up at the hearing of the nine branch chiefs on Wednesday saying he believed in democracy in the party.
He said he respected the voice of the grassroots in the party as they ensure that if the top leaders can't speak, they will be able to.
The leaders included Kamarul Azman Habibur Rahman (Taman TKK), Mustafa Kamil Mohamad (Kampung Linggi), and Ramli Awang (Sua Betong).
Muhyiddin confirmed that he was barred from speaking at the assembly.
He said that while he was still the deputy president, he had been prevented from doing the customary winding-up speech on the last day of the party's general assembly.
He added that he was also barred from speaking at any of the assemblies by the party's wings.
However, he said that would not stop him from attending the assembly as deputy president.
