PETALING JAYA - There is no "political dynasty or favouritism" in Umno because the party, under the leadership of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, has amended the constitution, said supreme council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi.
The amendments, he said, include enlarging the voting base - from 2,400 delegates to 146,000 - for the top leadership from the president to supreme council members.
He was responding to a blog posting by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who wrote that the culture or practice of "dynasty" should not take place in the party and that only those who are eligible and love Umno should be appointed for positions.
Dr Mahathir wrote that family ties should not be made as the basis to select or reject someone.
"Maybe this cannot be easily done, but attempts (to make this possible) must be done," he wrote.
Dr Mahathir however did not mention any particular leader in his posting last Friday.
Dr Mohd Puad said Dr Mahathir should first evaluate what is happening around him.
"If he is referring to Najib (about political dynasty in Umno), then Dr Mahathir is wrong because Najib only entered politics after his father passed away.
"If Dr Mahathir meant political dynasty as favouritism, perhaps he has forgotten that he was chosen by Tun Hussein Onn as (Umno) deputy president and that caused unhappiness among the then more senior vice-presidents," said Dr Mohd Puad.
