KUALA LUMPUR: Pakatan Harapan will field another debater to take on 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) president Arul Kanda Kandasamy after accepting the Dewan Rakyat Speaker's ruling, said DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
He said Pakatan Harapan would discuss the replacement candidate at a secretariat meeting on Wednesday afternoon, as Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua's participation in the debate would jeopardise his position as a member of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
"Without Pua in the PAC, DAP will lose one representation in the committee. We can't allow that to happen.
"Therefore, to ensure that this controversy is not hushed up, our collective decision as Pakatan Harapan is to field a replacement. We will discuss it this afternoon," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby on Wednesday.
Lim said the Opposition had taken note of Pandikar's clarification that Arul's status as a witness in the PAC probe would not be jeopardised if he proceeded with the debate.
Pandikar had also stated that there was no gag order on Pua in issuing statements about 1MDB in public, as long as he did not use information discussed during PAC proceedings.
"The debate can still go on, based on the clarification of the ruling that has been provided to us today," Lim said, adding that there was no obstruction for a non-PAC member to debate Arul. Pandikar had told the Dewan Rakyat that he would be powerless to prevent Pua from taking on Arul in the proposed live debate, but would resign from his position as Speaker as it would contravene his ruling.
