PETALING JAYA - Outraged and shocked netizens are demanding action against the man who stole the mobile phone of a 16-year-old student as he lay dying after being knocked down by a van.

Malaysians expressed both their condolences to the victim's family and also their disgust with the robber over social media.

"How is (the man) going to sleep peacefully at night knowing he just stole a dead boy's phone?" asked Gary Looi May.

The robber's heartless action has led to netizens questioning whether society's values had deteriorated.

"As a child lay dying, someone stole his phone. Malaysia really is a third world country or at least there are people with that sort of mentality," Mark David said.

"I cannot fathom why people are becoming more and more heartless these days," said Anis Hussain, adding she hoped the robber had a conscience.

Lim Kelly said this was not the first time an accident victim in distress had been robbed.

She claimed her friend who had met with an accident was also robbed of his gold necklace as he lay bleeding on the ground.

Sujatha Ram said the incident was very disheartening.
