KOTA KINABALU - Police shot dead a man who charged at a police party that was there to arrest him after villagers in northern Kota Marudu complained that he was threatening to kill people.
Jetin Kutio, 30, from Kampung Bambangan in Ulu Pitas, was killed on the spot.
According to Kota Marudu police chief Supt Mohd Isa Yusuf, the suspect charged at the three-man police party with a parang at 5.55pm on Friday.
He said villagers believed that the man was of unsound mind and his family had left the village sometime ago as he had constantly threatened them.
On the shooting, Supt Mohd Isa said as the police team approached Jetin, he cut his hands before running towards the policemen, who then fired a warning shot.
However, the suspect continued charging at them, forcing them to shoot him.
A 30-year-old farmer who suddenly appeared behind the suspect was hit by a stray bullet.
He has been warded at the Kota Marudu Hospital for observation and was reported to be in stable condition.
