JOHOR BARU - A group of parents picketed outside SJKT Kangkar Pulai to voice their concern over the safety of their children.
A 50m landslip occurred near the school's perimeter fence following a downpour on Thursday.
The parents, numbering around 100 and carrying placards, dispersed after they met the school's authorities following their hour-long demonstration that started at about noon yesterday.
Group spokesman K. Kanapathy, a former school parent-teacher association chairman, said it was the third landslip to hit the school this year.
"Each time, after it has happened, the contractor merely dumps earth onto the site of the incident and covers it with canvas," he said.
Kanapathy said Thursday's landslip was the worst, adding that many parents blamed the earth works being conducted on the expansion of the Pontian highway as the cause of the incidents.
"Even the retaining wall being built has been damaged due to the piling works in the area.
"We are worried that if this continues, the building's structure will be affected," he said, urging the public works department to take immediate action.
Kanapathy claimed that no one from the PWD visited the school since the latest landslip.
Johor Education, Information, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives committee chairman Md Jais Sarday said the district education department was aware of the landslip and that PWD's official report showed that the school is safe.
He urged parents to remain calm as the investigation is ongoing.
