Penang air moving to unhealthy

GEORGE TOWN -The sky over Penang was shrouded in haze as the air quality continues to deteriorate since early morning Wednesday.

According to the website of the Department of Environment, the Air Pollutant Index (API) at its monitoring station in Seberang Jaya 2 recorded a constant increase from 87 at 6am to 90 (9am) and 91 an hour later.

The API reading of 51-100 is considered moderate while 100 to 200 unhealthy.

The reading at the monitoring station in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) worsened from 89 at 6am to 96 (9am) before deteriorating further to 97 at 10am.

At the Perai station, the API moved from 78 at 6am to 80 at 9am and 81 (10am).

At 1pm, the API at Seberang Jaya 2, USM and Perai stations were 93, 98 and 83. In Perak, Amanda Yeap reports that the weather was hazier in some districts with visibility reduced to 3km.

The API in Manjung crossed the unhealthy level to 103 at 11am.

Areas in Taiping and Tanjung Malim remained in the moderate zone.
