GEORGE TOWN - The state government has purchased a Mercedes-Benz S300L for the usage of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

State Financial Officer Datuk Mokhtar Jait said the Chief Minister was entitled to two cars - Mercedes-Benz S400 and Mercedes-Benz S300 - but Lim only used one vehicle.

The chief minister started using the Mercedes-Benz, which was purchased at RM298,263.75 (S$114,720), on Monday.

The original price of the Mercedes-Benz S300L was RM657,218.

"The Mercedes-Benz S300L was exempted from tax and was given a special discount of RM100,000," said Mokhtar.

"The supplier of Mercedes-Benz has also given assurance that the state does not need to buy the Mercedes-Benz S300L and can return it to the supplier if the tax exemption was not granted."

Mokhtar said a state exco meeting was held on Nov 20 and a collective decision was made to purchase the luxury car.

"The Toyota Camry 2.5 that was used by Lim will be used by the Deputy Speaker Maktar Shapee," he said.

Lim was present at the press conference.
