PKR sec-gen to defend charge of causing hatred at Umno members

PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli has been ordered to enter his defence for the charge of intentionally disrupting the peace in his statement in a newspaper.

Sessions judge Azwarnida Affandi said the prosecution had proven a prima facie case against the Pandan MP.

She set Aug 20 for Rafizi to enter his defence.

Rafizi was charged on Aug 28 last year after he allegedly provoked Umno members in his statements in The Edge in a Feb 4 article "Will Rafizi quit if Selangor is not toppled".

It was alleged that his statements could have caused anger and hatred to be directed at Umno members.

He faces a jail term not exceeding two years, a fine, or both.

The Federal Constitution states that an elected representative is disqualified from office if he was fined over RM2,000 or jailed for a term exceeding one year.

Rafizi was represented by Eric Paulsen.
