KOTA KINABALU - A Forestry Department outpost at a virgin jungle reserve near Lahad Datu was fired upon by two suspected poachers in their attempt to enter the area.
The men, who were first seen on a motorcycle by the staff members at the station at Sepgaya, along the Silam-Danum Valley road, had apparently rode near the area before firing at the building there.
Several bullets hit the workers' quarters, while several hit a Sabah Forestry Department's vehicle parked nearby in the 7.30pm Wednesday incident.
No one was hurt and a police report lodged soon after.
Department director Datuk Sam Mannan said the incident was shocking, and hoped the authorities would speed up their investigations.
"This would affect not only our work here for sustainable forest management as it is within the Ulu Segama-Malua Forest Reserve, where research is being carried out, it would also affect tourist arrivals here," he said.
It was also understood that CCTV recordings of the incident had been handed over to the police.
However, the police could not be contacted for updates.
