NIBONG TEBAL- A policeman and his two-year-old son drowned, while his policewoman wife and their daughter were left in despair during a fishing trip at Sungai Kerian near here.

L/Kpl Abdul Halim Ibrahim, 52, jumped into the river when his son Mohd Halif Akim slipped and fell from their boat at about 6pm on Saturday.

The boy's body was recovered at about 12.30pm yesterday, while the father's body was found about five hours later at 5.40pm, both about 400m from where they fell in.

The bodies were sent to the Sungai Bakap Hospital near here for post-mortem.

L/Kpl Abdul Halim's wife Kpl Waridah Muang, 33, and daughter Nur Amira, five, were unharmed.

State police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said an operation was launched to find the missing duo immediately.

"The operation was called off later in the night," he said at the scene yesterday when the search resumed.

He said L/Kpl Abdul Halim was attached to the Batu Kawan police station while Kpl Waridah worked at the Nibong Tebal police station.

"It was a daily routine for the family after completing their duties," added SDCP Abdul Rahim.

A total of 95 people from the fire and rescue department, civil defence department, police, volunteers and residents were involved in the search.
