Policeman chokes to death in freak mishap

JOHOR BARU- A policeman died after he accidentally hanged himself with a nylon cord while entertaining his two children.

Kpl Anthony AK Chag @ Mohamad Hamid Anthony Abdullah, 45, had fashioned a noose with the nylon cord and was acting in front of his 14-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son at the Seri Alam police barracks when he slipped at around 9.30pm.

The children tried to help but the cord strangled him.

They then informed their mother Siti Nor Rizam Abdul Majid, who alerted the police.

Johor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Hasnan Hassan confirmed the incident in a statement, saying that the victim was a detective with the Seri Alam criminal investigation unit.

"The victim had been suffering from liver cirrhosis. His physical abilities and health were very weak," he said, adding that he was in and out of hospital for treatment.

SAC Hasnan said the victim's body was sent to Hospital Sultan Ismail and the case had been classified as sudden death.

"However, we are still continuing with investigations," he said.

He said the victim, who was from Kanowit, Sarawak, was later burried at the Muslim cemetery in Kebun Teh. He has two other children aged 18 and 19.
