Pre-war houses in Malacca gutted by fire

MALACCA - Fire ravaged a row of wooden houses in Kampung Jawa here, leaving 13 people from four families homeless.

Three of the seven pre-World War II houses were vacant at the time of the fire at 5.15am yesterday.

Jalan Kubu Fire and Rescue Department chief Yazid Md Tahir said 16 firemen in two fire engines prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent historical sites as well as another 20 houses.

"The fire damaged almost 80 per cent of the wooden structure by the time the fire engines arrived," he said.

Yazid said the proximity of the houses caused the fire to spread rapidly. No injuries were reported.

Yazid said the estimated loss was about RM20,000 (S$7800).

The cause of the fire, he added, was being investigated.
