KUALA LUMPUR - Puteri UMNO has called for reconciliation between Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, urging both leaders to settle their differences for the sake of the party.

The movement said good ties between the UMNO president and his predecessor were crucial for the party, which must remain united and strong to confront challenges and to face the 14th general election.

Puteri UMNO chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsuddin urged both parties to resolve their differences amicably and the movement was optimistic that ties between the two leaders would mend.

"We know both Dr Mahathir and Najib love UMNO and will not want to see the party in disarray. Puteri members have utmost respect and admiration for Dr Mahathir as the movement was 'born' during his leadership.

"At the same time, our support is with the president. We are loyal to our leader and we love our party," she said after Najib spent more than an hour with 178 Puteri chiefs to explain issues raised by Dr Mahathir.

Mas Ermieyati said it was unsettling for Puteri members to see the two "fighting to no end".

She said that during the closed-door session at the Putra World Trade Centre, the movement had assured Najib that he had their backing, adding that they accepted his explanation on 1Malaysia Development Board (1MDB), on Goods and Services Tax (GST), the economy and the case of murdered Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu.
