PETALING JAYA - Buyers of 2012 model Mercedes-Benz S Class are entitled to a RM100,000 (S$39,000) discount.

A check with a Mercedes-Benz dealer revealed that the discount is given in conjunction with the German luxury brand's year-end offer and stock clearance exercise.

"The discount is offered to anyone, including individual buyers, as long as the 2012 stock is still available," said the dealer, who did not want to be identified.

However, he said the discount is not applicable for the 2013 and 2014 models of the S Class.

The Penang government recently attracted criticism when it bought a new Mercedes-Benz S300L to replace Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's 18-year-old official car, a Mercedes-Benz S320.

It was reported that the car was bought at a bargain price - at just a little more than the amount paid for the earlier Mercedez-Benz in 1995.

Lim's new official car was priced at RM298,263.75 after tax exemption and a special discount of RM100,000.

State Financial Officer Datuk Mokhtar Jait said the discount was given as the S300L was a 2012 model.

In George Town, Lim questioned whether the Terengganu government was given a tax exemption when it spent RM3.43 million in 2008 to buy 14 Mercedes-Benz cars.

"I am not sure if Terengganu was given tax exemption. If not, they paid a higher price to get the cars," he told a press conference at the Penang Development Corporation yesterday.

He said yesterday that the state originally planned to get Mercedes-Benz as official cars, but did not manage to get assurance from the dealer about obtaining tax exemptions for 15 cars and was instead only offered one tax-exempt car.

Gerakan deputy secretary-general Dr Thor Teong Gee said in a press release that the Penang government previously criticised the Terengganu government for purchasing Mercedes-Benz cars but now did not practise what it preached.
