GEORGE TOWN - A man tried to break into an automated teller machine (ATM) at a bank, with firecrackers.

All he managed to do in the 5.20am caper was set off the alarm and scorch the outer part of the machine.

As soon as the alarm sounded, the man fled in a white car parked outside the bank branch at a shopping complex in Bukit Jambul.

Balik Pulau OCPD Supt Lai Fah Hin said the incident yesterday was captured on closed-circuit TV at the bank.

Police found remnants of exploded firecrackers at the row of ATMs.

It is believed the man had entered the bank by breaking its door.

The case is being investigated under Section 6 of the Explosives Act.
