Schoolboy allegedly confined in room attempts suicide

SEREMBAN - A 14-year-old boy, who was allegedly confined in a room is in critical condition after he attempted suicide by consuming weedkiller.

His father S. Ganesan, 52, said the boy was rushed to the Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital here on Wednesday.

Ganesan claimed that his son had been traumatised after two teachers forced the boy to lodge a police report against him.

The two teachers from the boy's school allegedly took him to the Lukut police station where they made him sign a report claiming that Ganesan was trying to force him to commit apostasy.

The boy is registered as a Muslim in his birth certificate and identity card following Ganesan's previous marriage to an Indonesian Muslim.

The teachers then allegedly brought him to the Islamic Centre here where he was confined for several hours.

Ganesan lodged a police report soon after his son was hospitalised, and police have also started a probe into the matter.

Education director-general Datuk Dr Khair Mohamad Yusof and state education director Datuk Kalsom Khalid said they had received a report from the school about the two teachers.

They declined to comment as the police was investigating the case.
