Semporna kidnap: Esscom weaknesses need to be rectified, says Liow

IPOH - The Government should ensure that the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) will prevent a recurrence of abductions and attacks in its area of operation, said MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

He said he was shocked to hear Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar's statement that the latest case could be linked to the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group.Liow said there was an urgent need to rectify weaknesses in Esscom.

He said the tourism industry in the area had been affected by the latest murder and abduction. Liow said he felt sad for the couple's family and hoped for Chang's safe return.

In Kuantan, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said security at the Esscom area would be tightened to curb cross-border crime.

"Claims by irresponsible parties that the incident was an intrusion, such as the one that happened in Lahad Datu, are not true," he said at the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency's corporate social responsibility programme called Jiwa Murni on Sunday.
