Semporna kidnap: Local pirates did it, says deputy home minister

PETALING JAYA - Local pirates and robbers are believed to be behind the murder of a Taiwanese man and the abduction of his wife from the island resort of Pom Pom off the coast of Semporna, said Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar on Friday.

He said there was no indication that the culprits were from neigbouring countries or southern Philippines militants.

"I have received the full report from the Sabah police commissioner...there is no evidence to suggest the culprits are from southern Philippines.

"We believe they are locals," he said when contacted Friday.

No other tourist had been abducted or harmed on the resort, he added.

The abducted woman was identified as Chang An Wei, 58. Her 57-year-old husband, Lim Min Hsu, was found dead with two bullet wounds on his chest.

The gunmen who arrived in a pump boat and raided Pom Pom Island and Spa Resort water villas at about 1am Friday had fled toward Pulau Mataking close to southern Philippines.
