For the past three decades, a 74-year-old man has been living alone in the woods near a residential area in Wangsa Melawati, Kuala Lumpur.
Kosmo!, which highlighted the plight of Mohamed Dris, said it was incredulous that someone could fall through the cracks of the social safety net in a progressive city.
Mohamed, who was once a rubber tapper, said he lived in a dilapidated hut because he could not afford to pay rent.
"I am too weak to work anymore. Furthermore, I am suffering from diabetes," he was quoted as saying.
Mohamed, who has never married, said he did not want to burden others by seeking their help.
He built the hut in 1980 using zinc boards, which have now eroded. He only has a table and rubber mats which he uses as a bed.
Wangsa Maju police found him during an operation on Dec 25.
Mohamed's case has been referred to the religious authorities and other agencies.
