Seven-year-old knocked down by school bus

JOHOR BARU - A seven-year-old girl was knocked down by her school bus soon after she alighted from the vehicle and walked in front of it to cross the road.

Nor Balqis Atiqah Hamdan Rasan Tawani Ahmad, a pupil of SK Permas Jaya 2, died after suffering head and body injuries in the afternoon incident at Jalan Seroja, near Taman Plentong Baru, here, yesterday.

Police have questioned the woman driver, in her 40s, under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for allegedly causing death due to reckless driving.

Seri Alam OCPD Supt Abdul Samad Salleh said after the girl got off the bus, the driver sped off without realising that she had knocked down Nor Balqis.

"It was only when she heard a scream and noticed the victim lying on the road shoulder that she stopped the bus," he said, adding that Nor Balqis died while being rushed to the Sultan Ismail Hospital.

The girl's mother was too distraught to speak while her father was said to be abroad at the time of the incident.

Nor Balqis' uncle, Sulaiman Ibrahim, 48, described Nor Balqis, the third of seven children in the family, as a cheerful girl who had always looked after her younger siblings.
