KUALA LUMPUR - A weekend family outing turned tragic when a seven-year-old girl fell three floors at the Gardens Mall.

Nurul Emielda Nadia Sallehuddin was going up to the third floor of the shopping mall when she fell at around 2pm yesterday.

According to her parents' statement to police, they had taken their eyes off her and heard a loud thud.

"They looked down and were shocked to see their daughter lying on the ground floor.

"It is believed that Nurul Emielda had slipped out of the corner of the escalator where there is a small opening," said Brickfields OCPD ACP Muhammad Azlee Abdullah.

An ambulance arrived shortly and Nurul Emielda was pronounced dead at the scene.

A shopping mall janitor said she saw the child lying in a pool of blood and that her head had been crushed.

"Her parents were wailing. The mother kept saying 'dia baru masuk darjah satu' (she just started Year One)," she said.

Shopping mall employees cordoned off the ground level and areas close to the escalators as police carried out investigations.

Nurul Emielda's body has been sent to the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) for post-mortem.
