Sex blogger just wants to stir up trouble, says Malaysian minister
Controversial blogger Alvin Tan

JOHOR BARU: Dr Wee Ka Siong has described as insane controversial blogger Alvin Tan's recent video mocking the azan, the Muslim call to prayer.

Dr Wee, who is Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said respecting other people's cultures and religions was very important in a harmonious country.

"He does these things to create trouble among Malaysians. Any rational Malaysian would not have insulted other people's beliefs but show tolerance and respect," he said after the launch of the Southern Malaysia Building Materials and Construction Technology Exhibition at Danga City Expo here yesterday.

On Tuesday, Tan, 27, uploaded a video on YouTube of himself performing his own rendition of the azan.

On a separate matter, Dr Wee explained that there were two ways of renewing work permits for foreigners, either via the MyEG online website or over the counter at Immi-gration Department offices.

"I don't want people to think that there is only one way to renew the permits," he said.

Meanwhile, a group of non-governmental organisations handed over a memorandum to the US embassy in Kuala Lumpur, demanding Tan's extradition to Malaysia.

Pertubuhan Minda Dan Social Prihatin president Ramesh Rao said the United States should grant asylum only to those coming from countries facing conflict.
