SIBU - The town was abuzz with news of shootings at two premier shopping centres which sent shoppers scurrying for shelter.
In the first shooting at the 28-storey Wisma Sanyan at about 8.50am yesterday, security personnel had initially thought that the gunshot was the sound of firecrackers going off.
However, during an inspection two hours later, they found a palm-sized hole on the glass panel on the ground floor of the building.
Police, who were only informed at 12.30pm, searched the area and found pellets believed to have been fired from a shotgun.
A witness, Edmond Wong, told The Star that he rushed out of the shopping centre after hearing a commotion outside.
Wong said he was told by another witness that he saw a car pull up and a man alight from it and fire a shot at the building.
While the police were still investigating the case, another team had to rush to the Sarawak House Shopping Complex about 1km away for another shooting case.
This time, a glass panel of the shopping complex was hit by five pellets. It is believed that the shooting was carried out the night before.
Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Kamal Kordi said police were looking for the motive behind the shootings.
