PETALING JAYA: The couple who attempted to commit suicide as a family were charged in a magistrate's court here with the murder of their five-year-old daughter.

Both Hiew Yook Cheang, 49, and his wife Wong Yin Tinn, 37, were charged before magistrate Ahmad Solihin Abd Wahid and the charge was read to them in Mandarin yesterday.

The couple appeared calm at the time.

Hiew, who was a contractor, and Wong, a housewife, were charged with murdering Mabel Hiew Mun, five, at their house in Jalan PJS 3/46, Sri Manja Square, Taman Sri Manja, here, between 7pm on Sept 13 and 8am on Sept 17.

The offence under Section 302 of the Penal Code carries a death sentence, if convicted.

Deputy public prosecutor Nur Aifaa Che Abdullah told the court that no bail would be offered for the charge against Hiew and Wong.

She applied for a mention date pending the chemist's report.

Magistrate Ahmad Solihin later fixed Nov 7 for mention.

Both were unrepresented.

The couple also has a seven-year-old son.
