JITRA - A super centenarian, believed to be the oldest man in the country, has died, leaving behind more than 70 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ahmad Abas, 114, who was the oldest man in Kubang Pasu, had 11 children, four of whom have passed away.

His youngest child Fatimah Ahmad, 54, said her father died at dawn yesterday in her home in Kampung Bendang Tok Leh, Jalan Sintok, in Changlun, near here.

"I woke him up at about 6.30am for subuh prayers but he was motionless. I realised then that he was gone.

"He was overjoyed over Raya this year because his grandchildren and great-grandchildren came home to celebrate with him," she said after the funeral at the village.

She said she did not expect her father to leave them because he had appeared healthy.

Ahmad's son Hani, 63, said his father was still energetic doing daily chores and other activities in the village.

"Most of his peers passed away a long time ago, but, Alhamdullilah, my dad was blessed to live until this age. He was often referred to when people talked about the history of this place," Hani said.
