Taiwan man robbed by armed thieves in Malaysia after meeting WeChat 'friend'

KUALA LUMPUR - A night out with a social media acquaintance turned out to be hell for a Taiwanese man when he was robbed and stripped naked by three assailants.

Chang Ping Yang, 30, had come to Malaysia last month to visit his girlfriend, who only wished to be known as Wong.

On July 24, Chang said he had an argument with Wong at her home and decided to go out to meet someone he had befriended a few days earlier on WeChat.

"I had met this girl Victoria once before. Around midnight that day, Victoria messaged me to ask if I wanted to have tea with her.

"Victoria took me to this secluded place near some factories and while we were in the car, I was suddenly attacked by three men at around 1am," said Chang at a press conference organised by MCA Public Services and Complaints Department chief Datuk Seri Michael Chong yesterday.

Chang claimed that during the attack, he was pepper sprayed, beaten with a baseball bat and slashed multiple times with razor blades.

The assailants also stripped Chang and took off with two of his phones, a gold chain and a silver bracelet, all worth a total of RM10,000, as well as a condominium access card.

He claimed that Victoria was unharmed during the attack.

Once the attack was over, Chang said he fled the scene to seek help nearby and a man provided him with a T-shirt and a towel.

Chang said he and the man later returned to the spot of the robbery, but there was no one around.

Chang and his girlfriend lodged a police report and were allegedly told that someone else had filed a similar report earlier.

The couple also lodged another report at the Taipei Economic and Cultural office.

Chong said the couple came to him as they wanted justice due to the "mysterious" circumstances of the incident.
