Teacher gunned down at junction

KULIM - A teacher was shot dead when he stopped his car at a traffic light junction in Keladi here.

K. Shanmugam, 45, died on the spot from numerous gunshot wounds on his body.

Police who rushed to the scene recovered nine bullet casings.

It is learnt that a pillion rider on a motorcycle fired at Shanmugam who was alone in the car during the incident at 12.20pm yesterday.

Shanmugam, who teaches in Berapit, Bukit Mertajam, lost control of the vehicle after being shot and rammed into another car. His body has been sent to the Sungai Petani Hospital for a post-mortem.

It is learnt that Shanmugam was detained by the police last month over a robbery case but was subsequently released.

Kulim OCPD Supt Ghuzlan Salleh, who confirmed the shooting, said the case was being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
