A senior citizen was found murdered by her daughter who arrived at her mother's home with her family.
Jariah Abu Bakar, 62, of Felda Lok Heng Barat in Kota Tinggi, Johor, was found lying on the floor with a bleeding head after failing to answer the door at 11pm on Monday.
Kota Tinggi district police chief Supt Rahmat Othman confirmed that the Bandar Penawar police station received a distress call at 12.05am on Tuesday and rushed to the scene upon receiving the call.
Supt Rahmat said five suspects between the ages of 15 and 28, including a couple, had been detained for seven days to assist in investigations.
"A 15-year-old school dropout is our prime suspect based on preliminary investigations," he said.
"We think this is a case of a robbery turned into murder as the victim's valuables were found missing from her house."
He added that the victim might have been beaten to death with a wooden stick in an attempt to stop her from screaming when she saw the suspect enter her house via the roof.
