Teenager detained for dumping foetus near cemetery

JOHOR BARU - A box containing the remains of an 18-week-old foetus was found under a bamboo tree near a Hindu cemetery along Jalan Kebun Teh here.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Sulaiman Salleh said that members of the public alerted the police after stumbling upon the box around 11am on Thursday.

"We believe that the foetus, which was left in a box with blood all over its body, was about 18-weeks-old," he said in a statement here on Friday.

ACP Sulaiman added that a 16-year-old teenager, believed to be the mother, was detained at her home just four hours after the foetus was found.

"It is learnt that the unmarried girl had gotten pregnant and had undergone an 'illegal' abortion at a private hospital here," he said, adding that the teenager is being detained to help with investigations.
