Teenager drowns after getting trapped in quicksand

NILAI, Malaysia - A Form Five student drowned while trying to save a friend whose legs were stuck in the quicksand at a sand mining area in Sungai Ngoi Ngoi, Batu 9 on Monday.

Ahmad Zainuddin Mohd Rosli, 17, died after he became stuck in the quicksand while trying to pull out his friend out in the 2.45pm incident.

Nilai deputy police chief, Deputy Superintendent Nasir Senit said the victim and his two friends, Mohd Firdaus Rosli, 17, and Yusnor Zarif Iskandar Mohd Yusof, 13, were bathing in the pool at about 1pm.

He said Mohd Yusnor screamed that his leg was being sucked in by the pool after bathing for about 10 minutes.

"The boys initially rushed back to the riverbank but the victim turned back to Mohd Yusnor.

"He pulled Mohd Yusnor and pushed him to the shore but he was sucked into the pool and drowned," he said.

He said several mining workers rushed to help the boys and brought them to the river bank, but the victim was pronounced dead at 2.45pm by the emergency personnel who arrived at the scene.

The body was brought to the Tuanku Jaafar Hospital in Seremban for post mortem.
