Thief escapes despite beating from residents

KUALA LUMPUR - A thief's break-in attempt ended badly for him thanks to a couple of plucky residents who confronted him with an iron rod.

In the 8pm incident on Sunday, one of the residents on Jalan Sri Hartamas 18, Taman Sri Hartamas, received a phone call from his neighbour, saying that there was someone inside her house.

The man asked her to stay inside her room and lock the door before calling another neighbour for help.

Both men sneaked up to the elderly neighbour's house armed with an iron rod and spotted the thief hiding in the garden.

They hit him with the iron rod several times but the injured thief managed to slip away and flee.

Ironically the incident occurred on the same street as Seputeh MP Teresa Kok's house, a matter of days after she had suffered a similar break-in.

Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Muhammad Azlee Abdullah confirmed that the incident had occurred but said no report was lodged by the owner of the house as nothing was taken.

Kok claimed that the thief was likely the same man who broke into her house on April 2. "One of the security guards recognised the licence plate number on the car which was the same used by the thief," she said. Kok said she hoped police would keep tabs on hospitals and clinics as the thief would most likely try to seek medical help for his injuries.
