Thousands join Johor Sultan in Chap Goh Meh celebration

PONTIAN: Johor Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar joined his subjects for the Chap Goh Meh celebrations here to mark the 15th day of the lunar new year.

Thousands flocked to the Pontian Mini Stadium here on Monday to celebrate the occasion with the Sultan.

Sultan Ibrahim garnered cheers and applause from the crowd when he spoke in Mandarin.

"Ni hao ma? (How are you?)," Sultan Ibrahim asked as he began his speech before stressing on the importance of unity and being together as a big family to reflect the spirit of Bangsa Johor.

"Johor has a culture where we treat each other like a family and no matter what descent or religion, I urge my people to celebrate each other's festivals," he said.

He ended his speech with tuan jie shi li liang, which means "united we stand" in Mandarin, much to the delight of the crowd.

Sultan Ibrahim, together with Mentri Besar Datuk Mohamed Khaled Nordin, state secretary Datuk Ismail Karim and state Domestic Trade, Tourism and Consumerism exco member Datuk Tee Siew Kiong, also tossed the yee sang to mark the auspicious event.
