GEORGE TOWN - Thousands were late for work here Wednesday as they ushered in the start of another wet season on the island this morning.

Traffic was almost at a standstill along all main roads, thanks to the continuous rain from about 3am, flash floods in the city and two accidents.

The accidents were a four-car pile-up near The Light along Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway and a car-and-taxi collision in Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah near Penang Skills Development Centre.

"I was stuck on Penang Bridge for nearly two hours. What a tiring morning," said Henry Butcher Penang vice president Max Wong, who reached his office in Burma Road at 10.30am.

A Bayan Lepas multinational corporation factory human resources manager, who declined to be named, said more than 20 per cent of her workforce was late.

"The morning rush was horrible for everyone. The two accidents plus the wet weather upset all of our meeting schedules."

Fortunately, it was low tide and the rain did not submerge many roads.
