ALOR SETAR, Malaysia - A heavily pregnant woman died after she was run down by a Butterworth-bound cargo train in Kampung Kuala Alor, Alor Merah near here.
The remains of Ku Nurul Shuhada Ku Rosli, 28, and that of her seven-month foetus were found along the railway track by villagers at about 10am yesterday.
Her husband, who wanted to be known only as Saiful, 43, said his wife suffered from depression.
He said he last saw his wife as she was leaving their house at about 8am to buy groceries from a nearby shop.
"Normally, she'll be back home within 10 minutes but when she failed to do so, my father-in-law and I went looking for her but she was nowhere to be found.
"After a while we went home and decided to wait for her there. Later, a friend came over and told us that someone had been run over by a train," he said when met at the Kota Setar police station.
Saiful said he ran to the scene and managed to identify his wife by the dress she was wearing.
"My wife had been depressed for a while. I recently took her to seek traditional treatment after noticing that she had been talking to herself. She seemed to be improving until a week ago, when her depression appeared to have worsened.
"On Friday, she started to ask for forgiveness from me and her parents for no apparent reason.
"I am in shock and now have to bring up our 13-month-old son on my own," he said.
OCPD Asst Comm Adzaman Mohd Jan said the incident had been classified as sudden death and that the remains of the woman and her foetus had been sent to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital for post-mortem.
