Two air-con technicians die as 4WD plunges into river

KEMAMAN - It was a routine for four technicians to travel together to Kuantan from Kuala Terengganu to service air-conditioners every month but they never got there.

Two of them died when the four-wheel drive vehicle they were in went out of control and plunged 10m into the Mak Ikar river here.

Driver Mohd Zul Hafiz Mohd, 27, from Kampung Losong and Mohd Amirul Nazri Alias, 23, from Sungai Rengas, both from Kuala Terengganu, died on the spot.

Muhammad Nazirul Iqram Maliki, 20, from Manir and Abdul Halim Che Adri, 22, from Kampung Mengabang Telipot, who were seated at the rear, suffered serious injuries and were warded at the Kemaman Hospital.

Kemaman police chief Supt Mohd Said Ibrahim said the four were headed to Kuantan when the incident happened at the Kuala Terengganu-Kuantan road at about 9.30am yesterday.

"Upon reaching a sharp bend, the 4WD spun out of control and hit a divider before plunging into the river.

"Several members of the public, who witnessed the incident, rushed over to help the victims," he said.

However, Supt Mohd Said said they found the driver dead and pinned to his seat while Mohd Amirul's body was retrieved by firemen from under the vehicle.

A passer-by, Mat Zaki Mat Daling, 43, said he alerted the police before helping to bring out two of the victims from the shallow river.

"I was still in shock. But I told myself to be brave as the victims were bleeding," he said.

A staff of the company, Siti Karmiza Md Zin, 36, said the management would pay for the burial and medical costs.
