PETALING JAYA - Police have nabbed a 22-year-old man believed to be the Uber driver whose accomplice robbed a pregnant passenger at knifepoint.
Serdang deputy OCPD Supt Lee Wai Leong said a team of policemen arrested the suspect following a tip-off at about 11pm on Wednesday at the Pagoh R&R in Muar, Johor.
He said the suspect, from Kulim, Kedah, had two previous convictions and has been remanded for seven days until May 31.
A black Proton Saga was seized.
Supt Lee added that police had already identified the other suspect through CCTV footage, and were tracing his whereabouts.
It was reported that a drive from Mid Valley to Puchong turned into an hour-long terror ride for 26-year-old Wong Mei Yan on Sunday.
Wong, a sales assistant, said she did not notice the driver's low-star ranking when her Uber ride arrived at 9.30pm.
Describing the accomplice as "small and thin", Wong said she could not hear their conversation because the radio was loud.
She said she did not speak to the driver until she realised that he had taken a different route despite being given directions.
The front passenger turned around holding a knife and told her to hand over her valuables as the car was nearing One Puchong Business Centre.
After Wong was robbed, the driver dropped her off in the middle of the road at 10.20pm at Koi Kinrara, about 5km away.
Wong waved down passers-by and sales executive Eddy Ong came to her aid.
He took her to a police station to report the robbery and related Wong's harrowing experience on social media, which went viral.
