KOTA KINABALU - An Umno division headquarters was razed to the ground in a late evening fire in Sabah's northern Pitas district.
The fire, which started at about 7.30pm on Thursday, destroyed the two-storey semi-concrete building which housed the Pitas Umno division office as well as the Unit Pemimpin Kemajuan Rakyat (UPKR).
Pitas assemblyman Datuk Bolkiah Ismail said it was lucky that the fire happened after office hours.
"If it had happened a couple of hours earlier, someone might have been hurt," Bolkiah said, adding that the blaze caused losses of some RM400,000 (S$150,077).
He said the fire might have been sparked by a short circuit in the old building.
State Fire and Rescue Department Public Relations Officer Mohd Affendy Ramin, however, said the cause of the fire was still being investigated.
