Umno polls: Coming up with new ways to stand out

PETALING JAYA - Contestants in the Umno elections this year have come out with some novel ideas to introduce themselves to the over 146,000 delegates.

Apart from calling cards and posters of all shapes and colours, there were also stickers, fans and buttons.

On the first day, campaign managers and agents were seen busy distributing these materials to the delegates who had come to meet the candidates in Perak, Selangor and the Federal Territory on Friday.

Some did so quietly while others were bolder, calling out the names and numbers of the contestants they were representing.

The activity lent quite a festive air to the programme which was held to allow delegates to meet the contestants in every state.

During the programme, which will be held in every state except Sarawak, over 200 contestants for Umno supreme council posts and Wanita, Youth and Puteri exco posts will be introduced to the delegates.

Each introduction will take less than a minute and while contestants are allowed to shake hands with delegates on arrival or departure, they are barred from making speeches.

The first day session organised by Perak and Selangor Umno in the morning and evening attracted over 1,000 delegates each, while the session held at the Putra World Trade Centre for the Federal Territory Umno at night drew almost double the number.

The programme continues today in Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan, followed by Negri Sembilan, Malacca and Johor tomorrow and Sabah on Wednesday.

The introduction programme for Perlis, Kedah and Penang will be held on Friday.
