PETALING JAYA - An Umno supreme council member has criticised Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for being "lazy" to check on the condition of schools nationwide some of which are in a deplorable state.
Dr Puad Zarkashi, a former deputy education minister, said because Muhyiddin, also Deputy Prime Minister, did not visit schools, the officers on the ground did not bother to do so and "everything look rosy from the top."
Attaching a photograph of a classroom in a deplorable state at a school in Keningau, Sabah, Puad said on his Facebook:
"The people posting picture of my school in Keningau are too weak. The cause of this is because officers in charge did not come down to the school.
"Why didn't they visit? Because the Minister and Deputy Minister are lazy to come down."
Puad said in his three years as deputy, he had visited almost 70 per cent of rural schools.
"There is also a school where I had to walk eight hours to get to, that is a school in Saliliran in Nabawan Sabah," said Puad, who heads the Special Affairs Department.
Puad said that the Government had spent billions on 1BestariNet but its effectiveness is still unproven.
He also stated the terrible state of dormitories and teachers' quarters in the interior of Sabah and Sarawak as problems.
"Muhyiddin, who has been Education Minister for two terms, should do something about these schools in the Sabah and Sarawak interior that are in poor conditions," he said.
Muhyiddin is assisted by Education Minister II Idris Jusoh, and two deputies Mary Yap and P. Kamalanathan.
