KUALA KUBU BARU - Umno will be weak if its members are only "yes men" who fear to speak the truth, said its vice-president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.
Shafie, who was dropped as Rural and Regional Development Minister in the Cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday, said that Umno members had to speak the truth.
"In the struggle, you cannot fear speaking the truth and if you continue to hold on to the belief that we are in this for the people, then insyaallah, we will not be rejected.
"For this party that I love, I pledge here before you that I will continue to fight for it.
"But is it wrong for me to advise? We cannot all be 'yes men'. We cannot have this. It will weaken us," Shafie said at the opening of the Hulu Selangor Umno meeting here yesterday.
The party, claimed Shafie, had also not addressed "bread and butter" issues affecting Malaysians, such as the impact of the Goods and Services Tax, the 1Malaysia Development Bhd controversy and others.
Later, he told reporters that his criticisms should be taken positively, adding that this was intended to strengthen Umno and confidence towards the Government.
"I will remain loyal. Who says I won't be loyal? But what is the harm in advising?" he said.
He also added that these issues must be resolved if the party wants to win in the next general election.
