ALOR GAJAH - Feelings of enmity and jealousy among Umno members can weaken unity in the party, said party vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Deputy Prime Minister said the party's political enemies recognised jealousy among the Malays as a weakness to be exploited.
"They want this not only to continue but also to deepen. History has seen the collapse of Islamic empires and civilisations due to betrayal, jealousy and hatred of one another.
"There are also those who are willing to compromise with the enemy. Such traits will undermine our Islamic faith and erode unity among the Malays, particularly Umno members," he said when opening the Masjid Tanah Umno delegates meeting yesterday.
Among those present were Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron and Masjid Tanah division chief Datuk Abdul Rauf Yusoh.
Dr Ahmad Zahid urged the members to set aside negative attributes and support the party and its leaders.
He said infighting among Umno members because of support for certain leaders should also stop immediately.
"Party members at all levels must be united in their support for the chosen leadership.
"We have no more time for discord among us and should unite to ensure victory in the next general election.
"We should start by eliminating feelings of jealousy among us," he said.
