Raging inferno: Villagers lending a helping hand as firemen work to save their homes at Kampung Gusung settlement in Likas, Kota Kinabalu.

KOTA KINABALU: More than 150 people were made homeless when a fire destroyed some 30 houses at the Kampung Gusung settlement in Likas.

The fire started at about 8pm on Saturday and spread quickly among the mostly wooden houses built close to each other at the settlement, located near the state Fisheries Department's research centre.

Villagers barely escaped with their families before the blaze engulfed their houses.

"I managed to grab my family's documents and pulled my two children out before the fire destroyed our house," said a housewife who wanted to be identified as Nurshana.

About 30 firemen and four fire engines from Lintas and Sembulan were sent to the scene.

The fire was brought under control by 9pm and put out two hours later.
